Gallstones In The Liver Are The Most Common Cause Of Illness!

An estimated one billion people in the world will suffer gall bladder disease at some stage in their life. In the United States, twenty million adults suffer from attacks of gallstones every year. In many cases, treatment consists of removing the gallbladder, at the cost of $5,000 or more per operation. Yet there are many more people, including those suffering a chronic illness such as heart disease, arthritis, MS or cancer, who have hundreds, if not thousands of gallstones blocking the bile ducts of their liver. A liver congested with gallstones may be one of the most common, yet rarely recognized causes of major illness today.

What Do Doctors Say About This?

Most people assume that gallstones occur only in the gallbladder; and so do most doctors. This assumption is wrong. Most gallstones are actually formed in the liver and comparatively few occur in the gall bladder. This can be verified by anyone who goes through a liver cleanse, regardless of whether he/she is a layperson, a medical doctor, a scientist, and even someone who no longer has a gall bladder and is thought to be free of gallstones altogether. Doctors who have done the cleanse themselves, or know of patients that have, are just as perplexed about the results of this simple cleanse as lay people.

Why Is It So Difficult To Detect Gallstones In The Liver?

The reason for the incomplete medical information on this subject may lie in the theories of modern medicine, suggesting that gallstones can only be formed in the gallbladder and not in the liver. Of course, it doesn’t help that the non-calcified hardened bile deposits (gallstones) congesting the liver bile ducts are invisible to X-rays. Since the bile, which the liver cells produce, and these stones, are made of the same stuff, ultrasound scans cannot detect them either. Only in some rare cases, where tens of thousands of stones have accumulated in the liver, has ultrasound technology been able to detect a few hundred of them. This makes modern diagnostic tools for detecting gallstones in the liver virtually ineffective. Having any persistent physical or mental health problem indicates gallstone accumulation in the liver.

What Are The Benefits?

By removing the stones through a series of liver cleanses (usually six to eight are sufficient to fully restore liver efficiency), and consequently maintaining a reasonably healthy diet and lifestyle, the liver returns to its natural effectiveness, and most, if not all, symptoms of discomfort begin to subside. Energy and well-being notably increase with each cleanse. Sweeping the liver clean eliminates thousands of bits of poisonous substances that have helped form the stones and block thousands of liver bile ducts. Cancer Care 101: Treating the Illness, Treating the Person

While you almost certainly need a good oncologist to prescribe and monitor your medical treatment, there is often much more to surviving cancer

Dr. Martin L. RossmanIn cancer care there are two complementary goals of treatment. One, the usual medical goal, is to kill cancer cells and tumors, or reduce their numbers and their ability to grow, reproduce, and spread (metastasize). The other, perhaps best called the healing goal, is to support the well-being and resistance of the patient. Here I use resistance to stand for all the mechanisms, known and unknown, that protect us from the development and dissemination of cancer.

Conventional medical care for cancer has for many years concentrated on destroying tumors without paying much attention to supporting the patient as a whole person, with innate healing capacities. Until recently, most people put themselves in the hands of an oncologist (cancer specialist) and did what they were told. While you almost certainly need a good oncologist to prescribe and monitor your medical treatment, there is often much more to surviving cancer. Charles Smith, M.D., is a prominent urologist who specialized for years in treating men with prostate cancer, and then developed aggressive prostate cancer himself. After going through treatment, he wrote:

“Cancer is not just a lump in your body that can be cut out or killed by radiation or drugs. It alters every aspect of your life. Time and time again patients would tell me this. Some would even say that, in the end, it was the best thing that ever happened to them. Statements like this make no sense to a physician who is solely focused on the details of surgery, radiation therapy, or ablation. I have come to the conclusion that you, as a patient, cannot simply allow the management of your cancer and your life to be limited by the narrow views of the physicians you encounter.”

Dr. Smith points to a major problem with the conventional approach to cancer. While it aggressively attempts to eliminate cancer cells, it does little or nothing to promote the health, vitality, and well-being of the person who is fighting that cancer. A poorly nourished, poorly supported person with cancer, overwhelmed by emotions, is likely to have a much more difficult time than one who is better nourished, better supported, and better balanced emotionally.

Years ago I moved into a new house with my wife and infant daughter. Next to the back windows around the baby’s room there were a number of ailing bushes. Not being much of a gardener, I called one in. A leather-skinned fellow looking twice his actual age said that the bushes had four different infestations and needed to be sprayed with four different chemical pesticides. When I asked him if they were toxic, he lit up a cigarette and looked at me as if I was from Mars. “Nah,” he said, drawing deeply on his smoke, “I’ve been using them for years and they haven’t bothered me none.”

Having a small child, I got a second opinion from an organic gardener, a pleasant young man who carefully examined the plants and their environment. He agreed completely with the diagnoses made by the first gardener, but his approach to treating them was quite different. He said, “These plants are pretty sick, but they haven’t been well cared for in some time. Let’s give them what they need and see what they can do on their own.” He then showed me how to prune the deadwood, aerate the soil, fertilize the plants, and get them on a regular watering schedule. In four months the bushes had regained their health and thrown off the infections themselves. The next year, they even produced beautiful blossoms.

The difference between the approaches of these two gardeners is a perfect analogy for a strictly medical versus an integrated approach to cancer care. The plants may still have needed pesticides if they weren’t able to recover themselves, but they would probably have needed smaller doses and fewer than the first gardener recommended. In the same way, you may well benefit from medical and surgical treatment, but you are likely to do much better with all therapies if your basic needs are attended to as well.

Supporting your innate healing abilities can only help you make the best use of any treatment you choose, and, alternatively, neglecting them is likely to make it more difficult for any treatment to work. As the second gardener said to me, “You know, if these plants don’t get regular water and proper nutrients, all the pesticides in the world won’t be able to cure them.

Supporting your health and eliminating your disease are two complementary approaches to healing that support and strengthen each other. In my experience, neither one works as well as both together.

You can use this analogy to see if there are any changes in your life that would support your own healing more effectively. Is there “dead-wood” in your life — areas where you put energy that does not produce something of value to your well-being? Can you eliminate any of it? Are there pests and parasites that can be picked off? Are you giving yourself good nutrition and enough water on a regular basis? Is there an appropriate balance of light (joy) and shade (rest) for you? What could you do to make that balance more enjoyable for yourself?

Supporting your health makes it easier to tolerate treatments that can sometimes be difficult, and that in turn increases the likelihood that the treatments will work as desired. Methods of supporting your health and enhancing resistance to cancer generally fall into three categories: (1) nutritional support, ranging from improvement of diet to sophisticated individualized programs of nutritional supplementation with vitamins, minerals, herbs, essential fatty acids, and natural biological response modifiers; (2) mind-body approaches, ranging from support groups to counseling, to meditation, stress reduction, and guided imagery practices, and body-mind practices such as yoga, chi gung, tai chi, Jin Shin Jyutsu; and (3) systematic approaches with time-honored healing systems, such as traditional Chinese medicine or Ayurvedic medicine.

While the methods differ, their goal is the same — supporting and stimulating the vitality and function of the innate healing systems of the body, mind, and spirit. This idea is an ancient one, which perhaps we lost sight of in our enthusiasm for what modem medical treatment might be able to do. In traditional Chinese medicine this is known as fu zheng therapy. Fu zheng translates as “supporting the righteous.” In China, fu zheng is not the sole therapy for cancer, but it is a useful complement to both traditional and modem means to eliminate tumors and cancer cells. Many studies have shown that good nutrition, herbs, acupuncture, and mind-body approaches are all effective in reducing adverse effects from conventional treatments, and very likely in improving treatment results.

Guided imagery has become quickly and widely accepted as a useful adjunct in the treatment of people with cancer due largely to its ease of use, low cost, and rapid psychological benefits. It has been shown to increase both the numbers and aggressiveness of natural killer cells when practiced over time, has been shown to reduce complications from surgery, relieve pain, and reduce adverse effects of chemotherapy. Imagery is a psychological and medical intervention likely to increase your odds of recovery.

Learning to Cope with Organochlorine Pollution

breast cancer preventionOrganochlorines are chemicals found in some herbicides and pesticides, in chlorine bleach and most chemical disinfectants, and many plastics, especially PVC (polyvinylchloride).

Organochlorines are implicated in causing and promoting breast cancer because they mutate genes and they cause breast cells to become more receptive to a cancer-promoting chemical called estradiol. Organochlorines weaken the immune system and lower your body’s resistance to bacteria and viruses. They also act as a negative type of estrogen in the body.

How do they enter our bodies?

Organochlorines enter our bodies through our drinking water, by eating foods grown with certain agricultural chemicals, and through the plastic linings on canned or microwaveable foods. They enter through our lungs by breathing in the fumes of chlorine bleach disinfectants and by body contact with chlorine bleached paper products such as tampons, toilet paper and paper cups.

How can we reduce our exposure?

Step One-Reduce Your Exposure

The first thing to do is to reduce your plastic consumption, especially of convenience foods. On plastic containers, there is typically a triangle with a number inside of it on the bottom of the container. You can recognize PVC or polyvinylchloride as the type of plastic that has a 3 in the center of the triangle.

As for paper products, use oxygen bleached or unbleached paper products. Companies who sell non-chlorine bleached paper products typically say so on the label and they do not necessarily market their products as “green” products.

Buy the non-chlorine bleach and more environmentally friendly household products. Simple vinegar and water can be used for many household chores.

Eating only organically produced meat and dairy products will reduce the amount of organochlorines in your diet by 80%.

Step Two-Help Your Liver

With help, your liver can metabolize organochlorines.

Flaxseeds and organic egg yolks contain lecithin, a chemical that speeds up the elimination of fat-soluble chemicals such as organochlorines by making them water-soluble.

Beans, lentils, red clover, soy products and chickweed contain chemicals called saponins. Saponins help to break down organochlorines, prevent cellular mutation and can stop the reproduction of cancer cells. These foods are strongly recommended for anybody who regularly consumes organochlorines.

Members of the cabbage family including broccoli, kale, turnips, radishes, cabbage, bok choy or cauliflower can help you metabolize organochlorines by increasing the production of non-cancerous by-products.

Step Three-Mother Nature’s Help

Woman-positive natural sources of estrogen can block entrance of organochlorines, estradiol and other cancer promoting estrogens when enough of them are in the blood stream. The reason behind this is that these positive hormones move quickly through our bodies whereas the cancer producing chemicals such as organochlorines move more slowly. If there are enough of these plant hormones in the blood stream, they can easily block organochlorines from attaching themselves to breast cells and from promoting cancer.

These plant hormones can be found in lentils, dried beans, tofu and fermented soy products such as tempeh and miso, parsnips, sweet potatoes, pomegranates, burdock roots, red clover, hops and ginseng. Regular intake of broccoli and cabbage is also helpful.

Post Transformation Tips

Making changes in favor of your survival and that of the environment often puts us in a period of re-adjustment, not only with the society we live in, but also with our family, friends and neighbors.

Several strategies we use to maintain positive social relations are

Natural self-defense does not mean natural aggression, nor does it mean that it will cause you to develop a social disorder triggered by the existence of organochlorines. Foods and herbs that encourage natural self-defense make you lose the taste for products associated with organochlorines.

Allow self-defense foods to empower you to envision and work towards an organochlorine free future without any anger about the present situation. In other words, don’t let the forces that encourage personal and environmental negligence push your buttons.

Chose recycled plastic toys or second hand plastic toys over new ones for your children.

Send lunches in reusable containers.

Bring a bean or lentil salad to the next barbecue or potluck supper.

Invite friends who use a lot of plastic and organochlorine products over to eat. Explain why you eat certain foods and what you have done to minimize your contribution to its proliferation. Relay the information in such a way that your guests feel comfortable and leave them to lose the taste for organochlorine products in their own way and time.

Use organic foods to show your body what a natural food is and have confidence that your body will use this knowledge to recognize what isn’t natural and respond appropriately to it. This is a goal that can be started even on a limited budget. The return of your natural body begins with one organic apple, especially a shared one!

Cancer: A Disease of Civilization?

An overwhelming body of evidence points to drastic changes in diet as the primary explanation for the increase in cancer

Dr Ralph MossEven today, we find huge disparities in the incidence of cancer worldwide, with increased rates seemingly tied to the adoption of a refined diet and other harmful habits. Hungary, for instance, has a cancer death rate of 272.2 per 100,000 (men) and 138.4 per 100,000 (women). Contrast this with Mexico, where the death rate among men is 85.0 and among women 78.9 per 100,000.

“Civilization” is not only a chauvinistic term but is such an all-encompassing concept that it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what aspects of it have contributed to the dramatic rise of cancer in the last century. Certainly tobacco has been a major culprit. Hungary has the highest rate of lung cancer in the world. I have visited that country four times and always came away shocked at the amount of smoking. On one trip I visited a number of famous medical facilities and never did my hosts fail to offer me cigarettes. When I met with one of the country’s highest ranking scientists, he nonchalantly chain-smoked throughout the entire meeting. After the fall of Communism, downtown Budapest became plastered with ads for American cigarettes. Philip Morris, makers of Marlboro, sponsored televised rock concerts and young women in Marlboro suits dispensed free samples of Marlboro cigarettes. Concertgoers who agreed to smoke the cigarettes received a complimentary pair of “designer Marlboro sunglasses.” There is no doubt that smoking has played a role in the rising rates of cancer.

However, an overwhelming body of evidence points to drastic changes in diet as the primary explanation for the increase in cancer. Indigenous people of regions across the globe seem protected so long as they eat the diet that their ancestors ate for millennia. But once they adopt Western dietary habits, cancer appears and then begins its inexorable climb towards the same astronomical heights as are seen in the societies they emulate.

Some scholars who studied vegetarian cultures have concluded that it was the high fruit and vegetable content that kept these native peoples from getting cancer. Conversely, some researchers who focused on northern populations in which meat was prominent have advocated a meat-based diet for cancer protection. Others have ascribed the healthfulness, longevity and lack of cancer in indigenous populations to the intake of specific nutrients (such as the “laetrile” found in such abundance in apricot kernels, a staple of the Hunza diet).

But no single, simplistic answer will fit these tremendously varied cultures. In my opinion, what these diverse populations ate is much less important than what they did not eat (at least until recently): “white” foods, specifically white sugar, white flour, and salt. The addition of these foods to their diet was disastrous to their health, as it has been to ours. White sugar and white flour are especially harmful, because these “high glycemic” foods are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, where they wreak havoc with the regulation of insulin and blood sugar levels. This is a major factor in increasing rates of type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Unfortunately, white sugar, white flour, and refined sweeteners are ubiquitous in the Western diet. They are found in sodas and other sweet drinks, breads and snack foods, beer and ice cream, you name it. But even “natural” forms of carbohydrates may not be as innocent as once thought. Whole wheat flour, potatoes, and other seemingly healthy foods also have a high glycemic index and may not be safe to consume in anything except small quantities.

Atkins Vindicated

Robert Atkins, MD, has been preaching against a high-carbohydrate diet for 30 years, much to the chagrin of the medical establishment. A recent cover story in the New York Times Magazine (7/7/02) vindicated the low-carbohydrate, high-protein and high-fat diet advocated by Atkins, citing a growing body of research which suggests that a diet of carbohydrate-rich foods is no guarantee of good health, let alone weight loss. In fact, as the American public has increased its consumption of carbohydrates and decreased its consumption of fatty meat, obesity rates have skyrocketed. In 1998, more than 50 percent of adults in the US were overweight. Obesity and type II diabetes among American children have also increased. At the same time, levels of physical activity have declined, further contributing to soaring rates of obesity and obesity-related illnesses in the US.

The list of diseases linked to obesity is a lengthy one. According to the American Cancer Society, obesity contributes to hypertension, lipid disorders, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and respiratory problems. And as body mass index goes up, rates of cancer also increase, by as much as 80 percent in women.

The Key to Cancer Prevention

It seems clear to me that cancer was not a major medical problem in recorded history until the last 150 years. And even today, populations that eat an indigenous diet rarely, if ever, get cancer. (Unfortunately, such populations are exceedingly scarce in this century.) However, in reviewing the evidence from these cultures as well as our own, the key issue for cancer prevention does not seem to be whether the diet is vegetarian or meat-eating, or whether it contains high quantities of fat and protein. The single most drastic change in the Western diet, which has occurred simultaneously with rising rates of cancer among those who consume it, has been the cheap availability of white flour, white sugar, and refined sweeteners such as corn syrup, as well as their inclusion in just about every food in the marketplace. The key to cancer prevention may turn out to be avoidance of the same foods that make your blood sugar run wild and that cause a plethora of other illnesses.
