Starcodes Jan 1, with a glimpse of 2010

by Heather Roan Robbins

Let’s be kind to ourselves on this New Year’s Day, right after a Full Moon in Cancer. Our feelings may be at high tide, and we may feel a little daunted by the year ahead. We are stepping into the transporter beam this year, but don’t have to start today.

These first few weeks of January give us a chance to close the books on last year. We recollect, remember, repair, and reorganize while Mercury retrogrades back to tap Pluto on Jan 16. The New Year picks up momentum in the second half of January as Mercury turns direct.

New Years Day is a time to rest and invest in our family of choice, a time to nurture and encourage possibilities. We may be tempted to do too much as the Sun semi-squares Jupiter, but it is better to move slowly and rejuvenate.

This weekend is more active and feisty. Remember with Mercury retrograde it is all too easy to misunderstand one another or rush into an accident, so keep the energy level steady as the mood picks up under a Leo Moon. If there’s tension, look without blame for a misunderstanding. Let’s keep an urge to renovate and transform to our own New Year’s resolutions and do not manage or manipulate others. We may begin to think strategically about next year, but need to keep all plans loose and adjustable, ready to adapt to changing circumstances.

Communication improves early next week, work picks up and some important short-term decisions fall into place as the Sun, Mercury and Venus conjunct in Capricorn under a Virgo Moon.  Our relationships need less strategy and more simple appreciation towards the end of the week.

Take the time now to reconnect to the soul, reconnect with intent, and with one another. It is going to be an amazing year. We  need to find our center of gravity and operate from there as a major T-square cracks open a new era, we need to  be well-centered to stay on track and moving forward, however rocky the terrain.

We left one era in 08, woke up and got restless, adjusted, released, and renewed in 09, and in 2010 we begin to see where we’re headed.  This high rate of change, of cultural, climactic, political and personal evolution continues through 2015, but how far we evolve, under what circumstance, and in what direction, is in our hands.

This time in history pivots on a one major aspect, a change-demanding T square, created as Saturn and Uranus oppose each other, an aspect that acts like the transporter beam from Star Trek taking us from one era of history to another.

In 2010 both disciplinarian Saturn and change-making Uranus shift signs from adaptable, mutable Virgo and Pisces into proactive, dynamic cardinal signs of Libra and Aries, and they both form an unsettling, innovative T-square with transformative Pluto in Capricorn. While they were in mutable signs, we complained a lot, we deconstructed the old systems, assessed the problem but seem to ask other people to fix it, or get mad because they haven’t. As these planets move to cardinal signs, we become more proactive, ready to take the renovations on our selves, and begin to reconstruct.

Saturn represents structure, the old ways, traditions, and authority and Uranus calls for change.

While this wild astrological earthquake can break open the potential of the future, it also puts stress on the cracks in the culture. Stress along the fault lines can literally shift the ground underneath us; the elements can remind us of their primordial power. Our vital loves will only strengthen this year, but any relationship that is just habit will feel the pressure to come alive or go away. Planetary oppositions tend to play out in the culture unless we stay really conscious, and so any power struggle or clash that tempts us to demonize the opposition, to oppress or feel oppressed, will feel the hot breath of this transit.

But we don’t have to act it out.  We can choose to see this projection and refuse to polarize.

Instead we can create a true revolution; break our patterns, seek to understand the other, and own up to the oppositions inside ourselves. We will change, but can change for the better if we lead it in the right direction.  We’re in for a freedom-loving rollercoaster ride.

Let’s break down the components of this complicated pattern.  As Saturn squares Pluto (exact in January and August, though we feel it all year long) we may be tempted to misuse our power as another misuses theirs. We will notice a tightness, feel it in our bones and teeth, and feel challenges to our structures, chains of command, architecture, our job security, all Saturn issues.

As it loosens these old forms, this aspect can birth new forms of structure and power in all its dimensions, like renewable utilities, healthy political power, and empowered individual souls. We need to avoid a temptation to waste time arguing, and instead reinvent our work.  And we need to remember revolutionizing authority does not just mean challenging the old forms, but redefining the paradigm and taking on responsible leadership ourselves, even if just in our own life.

We cannot build without a blueprint, and so to help us imagine where we’re going 2010 introduces new visions as Jupiter conjuncts imaginative, spirited Neptune today, on New Year’s Day, and enters intuitive Pisces a few weeks later. It is a magical time, with connections and opportunities that make no logical sense, though some will be too good to be true; we need to sort fear from reality and dream from opportunity.

Neptune also conjuncts healing Chiron now through the summer and reminds us that our fates are connected together, around the globe. Together they offer us a chance to compost our pain into fertilizer for our spiritual or creative growth. We may hit a philosophic crisis if we haven’t kept our philosophy integrated and alive, but this crisis can be a chance to find our connection to our source and renew all we do to support our soul. All this soggy Neptune energy can leave us flooded or awash early in the year; watch for water damage and keep a dream journal.

As structural Saturn moved forward into Libra and briefly dips back into Virgo this year, it reminds us that it takes good hard work to create beautiful dreams and healthy egalitarian partnerships. We get the vision, go back to do the homework, and then need to sort the results. By the fall we’ll be able assess which new creative projects and love interests are bearing fruit, and which aren’t.

Jupiter, the largest planet, pumps up the volume on whatever it touches, as it square-dances with Uranus all year it intensify our potential for change.  Uranus enters Aries 5/27, Jupiter enters 6/6, and they conjunct 6/10 to offer a taste of the future. They both retrograde back into Pisces (Uranus on 8/10, Jupiter 9/8) conjunct again 9/18, and then do this dance in reverse in 2011. We can expect technological breakthroughs that will really redefine our mode of operating. Together they empower the youth, but may leave our culture feeling afloat and unanchored in an unexplored ocean. We just need to remember that we already know how to swim.

As Uranus enters brash Aries it feeds the world’s revolutionary spirit. Old traditions may be temporarily ignored unless they’re restated afresh. The whole cultural center of gravity shifts to a younger focus, but we’ll still need to learn form the past to avoid familiar mistakes. If we feel a new generational gap expanding, let’s bridge it but not fight it; empower the next generation while honoring the unique wisdom of the last.

2010 is potential-packed; we can break through barriers and bring light to formerly dark corners. But we need to move forward with integrity and spiritual connection; what happens to the least of us happens to us all.

Thinning Down in the New Year

By Marlene Buffa

A new calendar year urges us to set new intentions for the coming twelve months.  Often playful, sometimes serious, these resolutions allow us to focus on what we hope to accomplish and also allow us an opportunity to ponder the possibilities we map out for ourselves.  Faced with a pencil and blank sheet of paper, we look up towards the ceiling as we strive to articulate our dreams, aspirations adventures for the coming year.

One popular goal, appearing for many of us year to year, is to lose weight.  We try one diet after another, struggle with exercise programs that get boring after a few weeks, and deny ourselves even infrequent simple indulgences, to lower that number on the ever truth-revealing scale.  We believe achieving a lower body weight in our earthly vehicle, raises our value on life’s scale.  Our spiritual weight hopefully increases, thereby improving our chances of satisfaction and contentment in all of life.  In the divine balance of our consciousness, we learn that by releasing one unit of measurement, we gain in other, more powerful aspects of who we truly are.

Thinly Veiled

Very often, the essence of our humanity hides behind a thin veil we generate to separate us from the world around us. Holding up a translucent shield, just thin enough for us to view life from the inside out, projects the illusion of mystery or secrecy.  Somehow, we believe that others can’t see through the armor of a thinly shielded persona, so we allow it to float around us like the dance of scarves as a coy partner with life.

When we examine what we are hiding by holding up a veil, we realize the answers reveal more than the veil disguises.  The parts of ourselves we reluctantly divulge to outsiders, hide from clear view, yet cannot muster the courage to openly appear as components of our true self.  When we realize that others seem intrigued by the illusions we set forth, we later know we cannot hide from the Infinite, or, more authentically, ourselves.

Thinning Out

Beginnings as with endings, finds us making choices of things we choose to keep in our lives and that which we freely release.  From people who no longer empower us, to bad habits, to possessions which will better serve others, we consciously make decisions for our new year by thinning out the herd of our life.

Forgiving, removing and releasing the old worn out patterns of thought and beliefs, taking a stand for yourself in a new beginning speaks loudly your resolution for change.  No matter what you choose to discard in your life, it all points to your spiritual center – what you allow – or don’t allow – to exist and affect you in your world.  With the cacophony of society rising every year, our culture demands more and more of our attention to both the subtle nuances of life as well as the clanging cymbals (symbols) of reality.  While we cannot control what and how much life puts in our path, yet we hold the power to determine how much affects us.  By thinning out that which negates our highest and best life experience, we declare to life our focus and intention to live fully within what matters.

Thin skinned

We’re human.  We take things personally.  We allow the microscopic disturbances of life to permeate our spirit and burrow into our very being.  Absorbing the positive and negative components swimming around us, we lack the filters necessary to differentiate between that which empowers us and that which may harm us.  Thin skinned may present as gullibility, vulnerability or instability, resulting in an unfortunate adaptation and consumption of energy separate from ourselves.

Differentiating between toughening and thickening the barrier of our spirit to prevent the invasion of foreign negativity, offers a vital challenge throughout our life experience.  While our perceptions may bring us a wide range of understanding and acknowledgement about what we choose to admit into our consciousness, thickness (or depth) still provides for an interaction between the world around us and our inner selves.  If we toughen our essence, we no longer observe the impact of potential good – or bad – on our lives; we simply construct a defensive barrier to all new ideas, thereby possibly denying the gift of growth in the process.  Most importantly, remember that which happens outside of us, need not be incorporated into our spirit.

Whether who you are hiding behind a superficial veil of illusion, or your make conscious choices to simplify your pool of options, or you strive to allow life to impact your spirit, remember a new calendar year presents opportunities for growth and for thinning out your life.  Return to the basics of your nature – acknowledge who you are and proudly display your unique qualities!  Keep those people, things and attitudes in your life which empower and bolster your journey, and finally, know what to absorb and to repel when the energies around you appear as a challenging opportunity for growth!

Teachings of Simhananda, “The Lion that Roars”

Simhananda, a Western spiritual master who has been offering teachings in Québec for over thirty years, has agreed to share some of his wisdom with us. Just like Padmasambhava (1) and Tsong Khapa (2), he lives in a country that is gripped by cold temperatures for a good part of the year. A warmth radiates from his being that leaves no one indifferent, allowing us to forget the -20oC temperatures that sometimes hold sway outside our homes. Guided by his Tibetan Master, he travels the planet seeking out termas (3), which he liberates in order to allow the energy of Padmasambhava to continue its work to benefit the evolution of humanity as a whole.

Question: You seem well versed in the work and teachings of Padmasambhava, can you tell us what is the nature of your bond?

Reply: Padmasambhava is recognized as being an exceptional Master during his time. He liberated the Tibetan people from the darkness that had imprisoned them for centuries. This ‘darkness’ arose, among other reasons, from the domination by certain negative powers that confined the consciousness of this people through false concepts, to the detriment of its spirituality, thus annihilating any possibility of ‘Awakening’ or ‘Liberation’.  Padmasambhava also gave birth to Buddhism in Tibet.  His work and its influence are still very evident there in our day. Thanks to the termas that he has handed down to us, in the form of his teachings, or if you prefer, the energy imprints of his consciousness, even today he helps humanity in its Awakening, for the common good.  As for these termas, he has hidden them in various places around the globe, more particularly in Asia. These are the precious tools that help us find our way through certain critical periods, periods that temporarily plunge mankind into darkness.  Since then, men have come to learn of these termas, and some have learned to liberate a few of them. I was given the mandate to pursue this task.

Q.: What does this mandate entail?

R.: I receive information regarding where the terma may be found and when it must be liberated. I then travel to this location several days ahead of time in order to prepare myself adequately for this work, which requires lengthy meditations in the presence of certain crystals and the recitation of specific invocations. Then, at the appointed hour, I present myself at the designated place and emit an energy which allows the terma to be liberated. A significant increase in energy is thereby generated, which disperses over the surrounding several kilometres, affecting those found in this region, along with others elsewhere, through the planet’s etheric currents.

Q.: What kinds of effects are produced?

R.: An opening at the level of consciousness which allows divine Light to penetrate into all living things, whether these are in the animal, vegetal, mineral or human domains. However, this penetration of Light sometimes results in forms of inner distress, since the Light, which by this means opens a channel, can cause an individual temporary discomfort. This Light sometimes helps expel what must be ‘cleansed’ or ‘changed’ in the self, and is always accompanied by a teaching, by a vibratory note, allowing for adjustments to be accomplished with energy and harmony.

Q.: You say that you receive precise directions for the liberation of terma: does this information emanate solely from your Tibetan Master?

R.: I work closely with this Master, who guides me in this task. He, in turn, works in perfect cooperation with his Master. In fact, this is a hierarchical chain of mutual assistance, not working towards a personal goal, but a purely altruistic one for humanity’s Awakening.

Q.: Why do you call yourself Simhananda? Was this name given to you at birth?

R.: The name Simhananda was given to me by my Master and is thus not my civil name. This name relates to one of my past lives and also embodies certain qualities which characterize me in this present incarnation.

Q.: What are these qualities?

R.: I don’t really like talking about myself. Moreover, this subject doesn’t especially interest me. I prefer to remain in the shadows and write. My students could tell you more about what I am. I can, however, mention to you that a force guides me, a powerful… energy that has always been part of my life. This energy is transmitted through the sound of my voice, and through my teachings, by means of a certain Presence which inhabits me and promotes a heightening of consciousness.

I take spiritual training very seriously and I believe that man possesses within himself the power to awaken his divine nature. It is a matter of ringing the key notes of his consciousness in order to cause it resonate and thereby awaken this buried part of his self which prevents him from recognizing his true nature. It is up to the individual to awaken, no one else can do it for him.

The name ‘Simhananda’ signifies, among other meanings, the one who roars. Since my astrological sign is the Lion, my roar can be heard when an individual needs coaxing to shake off the daily torpor caused by his work, and his social and family life. Those who come to me and are willing to work on themselves with honesty and determination change gradually and profoundly. The responsibility for transformation rests with the student, who remains free to choose whether or not to pursue this work in my company. Without this freedom, no real and lasting change is possible.

Q.: What do you mean by freedom?

R.: The freedom of the complete being who surrenders to his Soul’s desire, while taking into account the desires of his ego – the ego which often develops a real fear of change. Sooner or later in his evolution, the individual must confront this fear of change, even if, profoundly felt, change is his most heartfelt wish. The instructor – the Master – is available to guide him in his choices, but it is the individual who remains the sole master of his vessel (after the ego). To him alone falls the task of changing or not. The Master must not and cannot impose in any manner. He observes, roars upon occasion, advises, but never ‘imposes’. This is a spiritual law which should never, under any circumstances, be broken. A person is responsible for his karma, although the Master, out of compassion, supports part of the burden. This is why Masters prefer to live in a certain state of isolation in order to conserve a minimum of vital energy. Through their teachings, they take upon themselves a substantial measure of their students’ karma and thus expend a great deal of energy. All too often, students are unaware of this concept, as they live essentially centered upon themselves. The desire to evolve remains a desire, and I might add, this is an egotistic desire in the first years of any spiritual training. Man wants to evolve, wants to change in order to feel better and acquire greater control over his personal life.  He forgets that his evolution must also be accomplished for the good of all humanity. The future cannot be built single-handed; the group, and humanity as a whole are part of our human family, and we often tend to neglect this fact.

Q.: You speak of teachings and writings, but your name is also associated with ‘transformative photography’. Can a simple photograph really transform us?

R.: All too often, we reduce spirituality to a certain philosophy, a certain image or perhaps a certain meditative regimen. However, life itself is a source of profound transformation. In a certain manner, he who composes it does not adopt an appearance of either ordinary or extraordinary.  Life simply expresses a Presence which seeks merely to reveal itself. We are all interconnected. All the kingdoms of this World are interconnected. Over the course of time, we have become cognizant of this precious collaboration and have become experts in ‘personal marketing’ aimed solely at the satisfaction of our needs. We ‘forget to forget ourselves’ to benefit from all that surrounds us, what can be communicated to us, and what we are. Through the magic of photography, I try to create a moment of stasis in the individual’s consciousness, in order to allow for a moment of inner realization or even discovery to engage him. We do not all possess the skill to be profound meditants. But a photograph that is able to touch us particularly can awaken in us, even for a few brief instants, the recognition of this Presence or this Joy that inhabits us all.

Q.: In what way can the human being collaborate with Earth’s various kingdoms?

R.: In fact, the human being is called upon to contribute ‘creatively’ to the evolution of all the kingdoms populating this Earth. He must become a perfect vessel of Light in order to allow it to circulate through him, without obstruction, and be transmitted to all in his environs. He must one day, following many, many lifetimes of work upon himself, become God’s servant without any egotistic intent interfering to blot his consciousness. Earth’s destiny is to become a sacred planet, and man’s is to become an agent of transformation in the service of the Most Great with the ultimate aim being to achieve universal unity.

One must not forget, however, that each kingdom is endowed with its own intelligence and man must be mindful of this intelligence. For this task requires working together; it is not a matter of imposing one power over another. Each kingdom, the work of the Creator, holds within its domain a precious gift. Man, dependent on his destiny, must in the near future, carry the Light to the far reaches of these kingdoms. Thus an honest exchange and collaboration will arise between the diverse kingdoms in perfect harmony with the Light of the Divine Plan.

Q.: Do you consider yourself a Master?

R.: (Laughs) No, my students consider me that way, but as for me, I see myself more as a catalyst of consciousness, a guide, a spiritual friend who is not afraid to be frank and rattle the lethargic tendencies of the consciousness oppressed by too much external stimulation (television, games, videos, sports, outings, etc…).

Q.: What would you like to say to our readers to help them along their spiritual path?

R.: The answer is simple: be yourself! Do not be afraid to change, to see your life in its true likeness and also to see yourself in your true likeness. This may appear simple on the surface, but make no mistake; few of us accept ourselves as we are.

Spirituality is like physical training; at the outset, we are motivated despite the discomforts that beleaguer us. The most difficult part is to remain disciplined, to continue to work with determination and to have the nerve to persevere despite daily hurdles. Instead of losing weight physically, we lose our illusions, the false concepts that burden us and prevent our spiritual progression. We are predestined to become athletes of the spiritual path, warriors unafraid of their weaknesses and the changes imposed.

The spiritual path is built one step at a time, with each new stirring of consciousness that lights our spirit. All of us, we are all called upon to become better beings, awakened beings who journey on, sometimes through temporary darkness, towards a destiny that will reveal our true nature, which is divine.

(1)     Padmasambhava: ‘The lotus-born’; ‘The Precious Guru’; a contemporary ok the King Trisong Detsen, one of the founders of Tibetan Buddhism (8th Century) where he is venerated as the second Buddha; also considered to be the Protector of Tibet.

(2)     Tsong Khapa: (1357-1419) The incomparable Buddhist scholar known as Je Rinpoche, who helped create the great Gelugpa school of thought in the late 14th century in Tibet; a glorious emanation of Buddha Manjushri; the monasteries of Drepung, Sera, and Ganden were founded through his inspiration, influence and activities.

(3)     Terma: Terma are key Tibetan Buddhist and Bön teachings, which the tradition holds were originally esoterically hidden by various adepts such as Padmasambhava and his consorts in the 8th century for future discovery at auspicious times.

Simhananda, an award winning author, has written numerous books on photography and spirituality, and has been an experienced speaker on the said subject for over 35 years. Erudite, poet, music lover and art collector, this avid ‘terra’ traveler captures the essence of his many travels through his photography, which has been his passion for some time. Simhananda, literally means “lion’s roaring”. And so, do his pictures and writings ‘roar out’ their sensitivity, tenderness and spiritual statement to the world. He loves people, places and the planet.

to pounce at the first sign of weakness. It would be in your best interest to keep as low to the ground as possible. Don’t be alarmed if someone calls you a stick in the mud. You know what you like, you have your routine and you shouldn’t let anyone push you off course. Limit your acquisitions to the things you absolutely need. Many bridges may have been burned in the blinding light of short term gain. You are the ultimate judge of your own character.

PISCES

This week’s scenario is highlighted by a good time to get out there & feel alive. Recent moodiness may have made you feel a little sad, but this week you’ll feel glad to be alive. Your ability to be unique in all you do will result in your meeting the right people at the right time. Let your hair down and dress casually to go out socially. It’s probably for the best that you’re feeling a little extra rambunctious.  Humor may be the best way to cope with a grim situation, that’s got everyone down. Laugh at the impossible and you’ll be able to begin to make a list of the practical solutions. The total collapse of something long established could be very liberating for you. Look towards the future & don’t look back.
