Starcodes horoscopes for December 15 – 21, 2017

by Heather Roan Robbins

The Sun is a distant orb this darkest week of the year. The energy ebbs until the winter solstice, when the Sun enters Capricorn and appears to hold still for three days before the days begin to grow longer again. Saturn, the planet that symbolizes our bones and teeth, the traditions, structure, and rules that shape our society, enters its home sign of Capricorn for the next three years. We sit on the edge of a change, so let’s make friends with the gift of Capricorn and keep our eyes open for its shadow.

Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign whose determined, ambitious and competent energy is symbolized by an intriguing mer-goat, a creature with a mermaid’s tail that dives down to the bottom of the ocean of our collective consciousness to find a dream, and then walks it to the highest mountain. In Capricorn time, we need clear goals, mountains to climb, but this year may have trouble agreeing on what are those goals. Without a clear goal, we can get depressed or disoriented.

Every year, when the Sun enters Capricorn, we work our way towards the goal of winter holidays, climb up that mountain and can feel let down afterwards. To ease this let-down, it helps to make lists of small, achievable work that aims towards our long-term ideals, check them off, and feel like we’re getting somewhere.

This same attitude will be helpful medicine to handle the wrangling politics of the next three years while Saturn climbs through Capricorn. We’ll feel this pattern through our longing for social and political changes and can get depressed if we don’t feel like we’re getting somewhere. To make it through the next few years gracefully we need to clarify our long-term goals, find allies that are climbing up the same mountain, and take daily steps in that direction.

One shadow aspect of Capricorn we need to watch is an illusion that if the situation is uncomfortable, we need to control it more, or control the people around us. That will not be useful. Personal autonomy is paramount to the Capricorn gift; we don’t want someone else in the driver seat of our life.

The last time Saturn was in Capricorn, 1988-1991, it formed a three-way conjunction with Uranus and Neptune, a rare pattern that was last exact in 1306-7 and triggered a structural change in art, creativity, and government as it triggered the renaissance. In a quick recap of 1988-1991 we see what an exciting time it was. The Internet became public. Political tensions peaked in China with the demonstrations at Tianamen Square. The Iron Curtain sprung loose as Poland’s Communist Party was transformed by the trade Union Solidarity and pulled out of the Warsaw pact. Mikael Gorbachev disassembled totalitarian rule in Russia. Manuel Noriega was deposed as leader of Panama. A scandal around the Exxon Valdez oil spill caused us to re-examine the ecological habits of the oil industry.

It can be depressing to look back in history and see that we need to do the work all over again. The Iron Curtain has been reinforced, the fossil fuel industry may have stronger boats, but wants to drill in the Arctic and frack near Chaco Canyon. In each case, under Saturn in Capricorn some restrictive situation gets worse until it precipitates a crisis and is restructured. This time, as Saturn enters Capricorn, it approaches a conjunction with Pluto and starts to restructure our life, our government, and how we organize. Capricorn’s gift can be responsible and honorable leadership, one shadow side is the desire to control, to have power without honor and responsibility. It could trigger more efforts to restrict freedom but remove controls and legislation that protected economic equality.

But back to this present moment. Mercury is retrograde through December 22, making this a month to review, remember traditions. It’s a wonderful time to network with old friends and connections. But it can be a pragmatically difficult time. One minor mishap can roll into the next, small accident-prone glitches and mechanical snafus can pepper our life. Organizers may feel the need to make strong decisions, but those decisions will need to be adjusted or repealed later. Old triggers can bring us back to our blue moments, but we don’t have to stay there. We need to be able to laugh about the slapstick, and forgive one another. And we need to tap into our resources and roots.

After a moody couple of days this week, our holiday spirit returns tonightFriday evening as the Moon enter cheerful Sagittarius.
