Healing Power of the Mind Revealed in New Booksam
In his newly published book Healing the Soul: unexpected Stories of Hope, Courage, and the Power of Mind, prominent neurologist Bhupendra O. Khatri explores the power of the subconscious mind in healing. Stories of spirit, valor, and inexplicable medical miracles reflect his thirty years of practicing medicine and treating patients with complex neurological disorders such as MS.
Simultaneously, Dr. Khatri discusses the sobering challenges inherent in practicing medicine today. These include the influence of the healthcare industry, healthcare insurance, government regulations concerning pain treatment, an increasing reliance on electronic health records, and the rise in alternative medicine/options.
Dr. Khatri explains that practicing medicine in today’s digital age is so highly regulated and changing that it adversely affects the patient-doctor relationship. In fact, he fears this essential relationship is in peril of being destroyed.
He comments, “Doctors today often depend more on computers than on their own instincts and experience in caring for patients. We are now pulled in so many different directions that it’s no wonder the major complaint of patients is that their doctors do not spend enough time with them.”
Encouraged by many colleagues, journalists, and patients to share his stories as well as his research into the many issues he raises, Healing the Soul sheds light on little-known contradictions in the U.S. healthcare system while highlighting what Dr. Khatri calls “the incredible power of the subconscious to heal, postpone death, and deal with unspeakable circumstances.”
He comments, “Healing the Soul is intended as a reminder that there is no substitute for observation, listening, and touching if you truly want to heal your patients’ souls as well as their bodies.”
Healing the Soul has been praised by physicians around the world. Among the testimonials are these:
In this unique collection of stories, Dr. Khatri, a superb clinician and humanist, illustrates many of the important issues confronting patients and their health care providers…This anthology that reflects on the human condition through illness is both wonderfully engaging and educational.
– Joseph R. Berger, M.D., Professor of Neurology, Chief Multiple Sclerosis Division, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania
Dr. Bhupendra Khatri is a neurologist trained in the scientific tradition who has achieved much in a stellar career. He is esteemed by his colleagues for his meticulous scientific work and has earned that respect. However, as this book clearly shows, he knows that while science must comprise the basis for the effective practice of medicine, there is much more to being a physician than simply having a grasp of scientific facts…This book should be required reading for all physicians…
– Gareth J Parry, ONZM, MB, ChB, FRACP, Emeritus Professor of Neurology, University of Minnesota Consultant Neurologist, Wellington Hospital, New Zealand
Healing the Soul is a precious gift not only to those who bear the burden of life-altering illness but especially to physicians striving to truly care for such persons in this modern era of too much technology and too little time. Spending that time with and for the patients for whom one is privileged to care – laying hands on the patient and not the computer, listening instead of lecturing, truly caring for the human being whose trust you have been given, not earned – all such actions bring immeasurable reward, thoughtfully and meaningfully described by Dr. Khatri.
